What Are Polycarbonate Snow Guards?

Polycarbonate snow guards are individual pad-style devices that mount directly to metal roof panels to prevent sudden snow and ice slides. Unlike continuous rail systems, polycarbonate guards work by creating friction points across the roof surface, holding the snowpack in place until it melts gradually. Choosing the Right Guard for Your Roof Profile

Metal roof panels are not all the same shape. The three most common profiles in Canadian residential and agricultural roofing are R-Panel (exposed fastener), corrugated, and PBR (Purlin Bearing Rib). Each profile requires a snow guard designed to sit correctly on its surface geometry:

• R-Panel guards mount on the flat between ribs, typically spaced to align with the panel's minor rib pattern.
• Corrugated guards follow the wave shape and mount at the crest or valley depending on the specific guard model.
• PBR guards sit on the wide flat of the panel, offering maximum adhesive contact area.

How Many Snow Guards Do You Need?

The number of individual snow guards required depends on four factors: ground snow load (measured in kPa across Canada), roof slope, eave-to-ridge distance, and panel profile. In general, steeper slopes and higher snow loads require more guards per row and more rows overall.

As a baseline, most Canadian metal roofs need guards spaced 12–24 inches (30–60 cm) apart in staggered rows positioned at the eave line and midway up the slope. For ground snow loads above 2.5 kPa — common in Quebec, Northern Ontario, British Columbia's interior, and the Maritimes — additional rows with tighter spacing are recommended.

Installation Tips for Individual Guards

Whether you're adding guards to an existing installation or starting a new section, proper surface preparation is the single biggest factor in long-term performance:

• Adhesive mounts: Clean the panel surface with isopropyl alcohol or acetone. Apply SB-190 adhesive per the manufacturer's instructions. Install at temperatures above 5°C and allow 24–72 hours for full cure before exposure to snow load.
• Screw mounts: Pre-drill through the panel flat (not the rib). Use the provided self-sealing screws with EPDM washers. Apply butyl tape or compatible sealant around the fastener to prevent moisture intrusion.

For retrofit projects, stagger new guards between existing ones rather than aligning them in a straight line. A staggered pattern distributes load more evenly and reduces stress concentration on individual guards.
