Walk through any Canadian neighbourhood with metal roofs and you'll see two very different approaches to snow retention: rows of small plastic-looking pads dotted across the panels, and long horizontal bars running above the eaves. Both are doing the same job — holding the snowpack on the roof so it melts off gradually instead of avalanching onto whatever is below. But they get there in very different ways, and choosing the wrong one for your roof, panel type, or snow load is the most common mistake we see.
What Pad-Style Snow Guards Are
Pad-style guards (sometimes called snow cleats or snow stops) are individual polycarbonate or metal units, usually 3–6 inches wide, installed in a staggered grid pattern across the lower portion of the roof. Each pad interrupts the sliding snowpack a little; together, dozens of them hold the field of snow in place.
They attach one of two ways: adhesive mounting (glued to the panel with a polyurethane sealant like SB-190, no holes in your roof) or screw-down mounting through the panel into the deck — typically on exposed-fastener roofs like ag panel, where the panel is already screwed down anyway.
What Bar-Style Systems Are
Bar systems (snow bars, snow rails, snow fences) are continuous horizontal rails mounted a foot or two up from the eave, running the full width of the roof. Instead of dozens of small interruptions, a bar creates one solid fence line that the entire snowpack sits behind.
On standing seam roofs, bars attach with non-penetrating clamps that grip the seam using set screws — no holes, no voided panel warranty. On exposed-fastener and corrugated panels, screw-down brackets fasten through the panel into structure. Systems like SnoBar and ColorBar can also be doubled up (two rows of bars) for high snow load regions or long roof runs.
Head-to-Head: How They Compare
Holding strength
This is the biggest separator. A properly clamped bar system is anchored to the structure of the roof (or the seams, which are formed from the panels themselves) and will hold heavy, wet, consolidated snowpack. Pads rely on many small contact points; adhesive pads in particular are limited by the bond strength of the sealant. In high snow load provinces — think interior BC, northern Ontario, Quebec's snow belt, most of the Prairies — bars are usually the right call, especially on longer roof runs where the sliding force adds up fast.
Cost
Pads win on upfront price for small, simple roofs. A bundle of polycarbonate guards and a few tubes of sealant can protect a porch, garage, or short eave for a fraction of a bar system. Bars cost more per linear foot but scale better — on a large roof, one or two rows of bar often ends up competitive with the hundreds of pads a proper layout would require.
Appearance
This one is personal taste. Clear polycarbonate pads nearly disappear on most roofs. Bars make a cleaner architectural line, and systems like ColorBar accept a colour strip cut from your own panel material, so the bar matches the roof exactly.
Panel compatibility
Standing seam roofs are bar country — clamp-on systems were designed for them, and gluing pads to a floating panel that expands and contracts is asking a lot of the adhesive. Exposed-fastener panels (ag panel, R-panel, corrugated) work with either screw-down pads or screw-down bar brackets. Installation
Pads are the DIY-friendly option: layout, glue or screw, done. Bars need accurate clamp spacing and torque, but a competent handy homeowner or any metal roofer can install them in an afternoon with common tools. Neither requires specialty trades.
The Quick Decision Guide
Choose pad-style guards if: your roof is smaller or has short runs, your area sees light-to-moderate snow loads, you're installing in warm weather, you want the lowest cost of entry, or you want guards that visually disappear.
Choose a bar system if: you have a standing seam roof, you're in a heavy snow load region, your roof runs are long or steep, you're protecting something critical below (entryways, gas meters, heat pumps, decks, parking), or you need to install outside the adhesive curing season.
Plenty of Canadian roofs use both — a bar row above the eave doing the heavy lifting, with pads further up-slope breaking the field on very long runs.
